I just installed a new element in the heater tube. After install and making connections, filled with water, but the seal isn't adequate around the terminals and the heater tube. Does one usually put a sealant here when replacing elements? I used the nut and rubber o ring that came with the element, but is isn't stopping the flow of water on either one. Please enlighten me on the details.
thanks so much.

No sealant. Make sure the ceramic seals around the terminals didn't get damaged. You need to use two wrenches one holding the terminals and other to tighten down the nuts.

I'll check the ceramic seal again, but checked and it seemed fine after install.
Are there different sizes of holes in the heater tubes for the terminals to go through? Or are they standard sizes?

They are usually standard size. I am not sure why it would be leaking.
