I use a Nature2 cartridge, plus Leisure Time Shock with Spa 56 chlorine,I have been on this regime for a couple of years now and get consistent test results. I use very little of the two chemicals I already mentioned, plus occasional small amounts of Leisure Time Alkalinity or PH Increase. My problem is a mildew odor coming off of the water. Any ideas?thankscr

If your spa chemicals are in balanced as well as the pH it could be coming from the spa cover. If your cover is not new and a few years old it's very likely that is the cause. Also if your spa has pillows it is a good idea to remove those and clean with a mild soapy water. I also recommend removing them when not using the spa, this will prolong the life of the pillows. The area between the spa cover and the water is very harsh and over time the cover can absorb this odor.

How often do you change your filter? It may be a good idea to change your filter more frequently. I prefer to use the filter rotation method, while cleaning your dirty filter, swap it out with a clean dry spare. With this system you'll never have to wait to use your spa, and your spa filters will last longer. Allowing filters to dry completely after cleaning will help destroy any resident microorganisms.

Here's fresh input to an old thread, but not an old topic! Smelly spas. Does your spa have ozone (aka ozone generator)? Most do have ozone which helps not only kill bacteria (which causes stink), viruses, molds and mildews upon contact. POW! Because ozone is doing the tough work in keeping the water sanitized and smelling fresh, you need very little chemical use. AND, the chemical of choice becomes more effective and less toxic when used with ozone. Nature 2 is a great choice and works well with ozone, further preventing bacteria from growing.
