Thread: Heater shut off

I can only get my Hot Springs Prodigy to heat up if I run the jets. Otherwise it blows the internal breaker. What could be the issue and how do I fix it? The spa is older and I bought it from a friend that had it and never used it. I am trying to get it into shape.

So everytime the heater comes on it blows the breaker. Is it the GFCI that is tripping. What size is the breaker? It could be the spa heater shorting out and is not uncommon on older spas. The element can get a small pin hole and will trip the breaker.

The breaker has already been checked its good. 110 I believe. I had an electrician check that it is right. The heater will stay on for a short time, then the breaker not for the house but on the the black plug in box underneath the spa near the pumps pops. Yet if I keep the jets running and the heater on it will heat it just takes a long long time. I am still having trouble pinpointing the exact year of the spa. I have the serial number but have had no luck getting a lock on it. I do believe from what I can find its a 1990.

So when you said that the heater will come on for a short time and then the breaker trips, but then you said if you keep the jets running and the heater on it takes a very long time to heat. When the jets are running for a long time is the heater actually on? It could be that the heater is not on and the heat from the pump running is actually heating up the spa which is possible but does take a long time. Verify that the heater is not on when the pump is running for this long period. If the heater is not on then put the spa in a heat call and verify that the heater is coming on and breaker trips. Then turn off all power to spa, disconnect the heater and put spa in a heat call. If the breaker holds then I believe you have a short in the heater.

The area that injects the hot water in will put hot water out with the heater on. Will the pump running actually get the water tem up to 106 from 30 in 2 days? I am not sure what the heat call is you are talking about? I do really appreciate all the help you are giving me. WE love this spa and cant afford a new one, but want to get ours fixed right. We should be getting our cover we ordered from hottubworks this coming week.

The spa will get from 30 degrees to 106 in 2 days, can the pump do that much? I dont understand what the heat call you are talking about is. I appreciate all the help as we cannot purchase a new spa, but we love ours and want to get it fixed right. We should be getting our spa cover from hottubworks this week.

The spa pump will heat up the water but I do not believe it could heat that rapid in two days, was it running 24/7? A heat call is when you turn the thermostat up and the heat indicator comes on. Usually the top side panel will have a light or indicator that comes on showing that the heater is on. So when that indicator is on we need to see if the breaker trips, if so then turn off power and disconnect the heater. Turn power back on, turn up thermostat and see if the breaker holds. Does your house breaker ever trip? Is this breaker mounted on the control box, or could it be a manual high limit mounted on the heater box. Is it possible to send me digital pictures of this part to mary@hottubworks.com?
