Thread: Trouble with thermostat reading

We have a Leisure Time Spa that is approximately 4 1/2 years old. The thermostat readout has been malfunctioning. The temperature will be at 100 for example and suddenly the readout will jump to 114 causing the breaker to trip. The actual water temperature is not 114. This problem has been occuring off and on for several months. We have cleaned the filter cartridge and adjusted the water levels; however this does not seem to solve the problem.

So the GFCI is tripping, or is it a mechanical high limit that is tripping? A control panel readout would not cause the breaker to trip. I need to know what is tripping to try and troubleshoot what is causing the problem. It could be a number of problems, pump, sensor, heater, circuit board sticking relay, or an old filter even if it looks clean.

I just clarified the problem with my husband. Apparently, the breaker does not actually trip. I thought it did. The temperature readout spikes say to 114 and the hot tub shuts itself off. It will read 100 and a moment later read 114. The problem seems to occur more frequently when we turn on the second pump. This may just be a coincidence as it does not happen every time. There are also instances in which the temperature reading is extremely high when the hot tub has not been used.
Our filter is approximately a year old and has been cleaned. We just refilled the hot tub over the weekend as the local pool place had to repair a reoccuring leak. The circuit board was replaced a year and a half ago.

I spoke with my husband to clarify the status. Apparently, the breaker does not actually trip, rather the readout spikes and the hot tub shuts off. This has been occuring for the past 3 to 6 months. The filter is approximately a year old and was cleaned recently. The hot tub was refilled over the weekend as the service technician repaired a recurring leak. The circuit board is approximately a year and a half old. We have noticed the temperature readout to be high even at times when the spa was not used. It typically with jump from a readout of 100 to 114 in a moment. My husband has also noticed that, probably coincidentally, it occurs more often when the second pump is turened on.

ok that makes sense. It sounds like you may be having a temperature sensor problem. Usually when the readout does not match what the actual water temperature is it is the temperature sensor causing the problem.

Yes it can be replaced. In the control load box there may be a wiring diagram. You will have a high limit sensor as well as a temperature sensor. You need to locate which one is the temp sensor from the wiring diagram. It should show you where it plugs into the circuit board. Follow those wire to the sensor. Sometimes you will have both the temp and high limit on the heater. Other times you will have the high limit on the heater but the temp sensor head will be mounted in the spa somewhere to monitor the water temperature inside the spa.
