Thread: OHH error code help

I have a 7 year old Clearwater spa. When I turn the tub on, it goes through the power cycle then immediately shows an OHH error code and does nothing else. The water is around 50 degrees now.
The manual says "OHH = Overheat. Spa has shut down. One sensor has detected 118º F. at heater."
After researching that, a heater overheat condition that generates an "OHH" Error message is most likely the result of a Low Flow Condition. But could be a number of things.
If I press the Jet 1 or Jet 2 button, one of the pumps does turn on momentarily, but then shuts off. I can hear it and can also see a little bit of water movement when it happens out of some of the jets.
I have two 56 frame waterway pumps and I think the closest one to the heater is a 2 speed with low speed acting as the circulation function because there is plumbing connected directly from the heater to this pump. Also, I just replaced this pump a year ago.
I'm hoping to get some hints or tips about how to determine if I really do have a low flow condition. If so, in which pump. Or if I have a bad element, problem with the heat sensors or a relay issue.
If I do have a low flow condition, could it be either pump that is causing it, or just the pump closest to the heater?
I'm reluctant to believe it is the low flow issue because when I turn the spa on, the water in the element would have to heat from 50 degrees that is at now to 118 degrees in under 3 seconds.
It is hard for me to believe that the element could heat up that quickly, but I just don't know.

When you push jets one button that should be for the two speed pump connected to heater. If this is pump shutting off after a few seconds then it could cause an OHH message because of no water going through heater. When this pump shuts down like that is could be the circuit board or motor so you would need to verify voltage is going to motor when shuts down or not. If not could be an issue with the circuit board pump relay.

Thanks for your reply Mary.
When I turn the spa on, the pumps do not turn on. It immediately shows an OHH error. From that point, if I press the Jet 1 button, I do hear a pump turn on briefly and see some water movement but then it shuts off.
So, the OHH message is showing before I even press the Jet 1 button.
With that in mind, could it still be a pump issue if it flags the OHH code?

This can also be a sensor causing the OHH error code. Have you tried to run it without the filter in the spa?

I have not removed the filters because it displays the OHH code without even turning the pumps on. I didn't think the filters would matter at this point because the pumps aren't even on to push water to the filters.
The filters are relatively new and not clogged for what's its worth.

The 2-speed pump #1 measured 240v when Jet1 button was pressed and measuring for low speed across white and black wires. I saw 240v across red and white wire which is for the high speed.
My 1-speed pump #2 got 240v when I pressed jet 2 button.
I measured both pumps on the circuit board where the pump plugs into, not on the pump itself.
All fuses are good.
The heater measured 120v on both htr1 to ground and htr2 to ground. Measured 0v across each other. Checked this during the priming process and pressing jet buttons a few times.
It did not feel any warmth on the heater at all at any point in time.
I measured the resistance across the heat sensors in the cold hot tub water and they both measured approximately 41.5k ohms. I then removed the heater sensors and placed them in a cup of hot sink water and both gradually lowered to roughly 10.5 k ohms. I figured this was a decent way to test that one wasn't bad since they both acted the same.
When in Priming mode, the blower works and I can get each pump to turn on breifly before the OHH code flashes. It also gave me an OHS code for the first time while troubleshooting.
Any advice on what I should do next?

After more troubleshooting, I am convinced that I have an issue with my circuit board. I am sending it out tomorrow to get repaired. I will update this thread after I have installed the repaired board in case someone has this issue in the future.
