7 Hot Tub Safety Tips

Seven ways to Improve Hot Tub Safety

spa-buddies=for-safety

A woman was found dead in a hot tub last week in Nevada. No foul play is suspected, it seems that she may have just slipped under the water.

Spas are very relaxing and can sometimes be too relaxing!

It seems to me to be a good time to provide some helpful spa safety tips for spa and hot tub owners.

  1. If you have a medical conditions, check with a doctor, and invite a buddy to join you. Safety in pairs.
  2. Hot tubs will increase blood flow and heart rate, so if you have issues with either, be careful.
  3. Don’t stay in the spa for too long. 30 min max. Get out and cool off every 15 minutes is best or keep tub at lower temp.
  4. Stay hydrated with water. Booze is not a good mix with hot water. Alcohol hits you quicker in a spa.
  5. When not using Hot Tub, always place a locking hot tub cover on the hot tub.  This will protect you and little ones from harm.
  6. Never allow children to use the spa or hot tub unsupervised.
  7. Ensure that your spa drain covers are secured properly to prevent entrapment

I know that these seem like common sense points about hot tub safety yet everyday we see reports of people ingnoring these simple guidelines.

Hot Tubs help fight hypertension & diabetes

Gatwick, UK (PRWEB UK) 17 May 2012

We always knew that hot tubs were a great place to relax with family and friends, and to get a heavenly, soothing massage, but research shows that they are also good for your health, helping fight off serious diseases like hypertension and diabetes, according to hot tub specialists Waterstream Hot Tubs, regional distributors for respected American hot tub manufacturer Spa Crest Hot Tubs.

The UK has seen a huge rise in numbers diagnosed with diabetes, rising from 1.4 million in 1996 to 2.9 million today. Estimates suggest that over four million people will have diabetes by 2025 with most cases being Type 2 diabetes, due to the rise in the numbers who are obese and an increasingly ageing population. More than ever there is an acute need to find ways to combat type 2 diabetes.

According to a report in this week’s ‘The Guardian’, the newspaper of the University of California at San Diego, results of numerous studies catalogue the positive health benefits of regular hot-tubbing, in particular Dr Philip Hooper noted in a 1999 article in the New England Journal Of Medicine that tests on diabetic patients showed significant reductions in blood glucose levels, after only three weeks of hot tub bathing for 30 minutes a day, 6 days a week!

In 1962 in Pavia, Italy, Ferruccio Ritossa accidentally discovered the ‘heat shock response’, while studying molecular genetics. A fellow student increased the temperature of his drosophila (fruit fly) incubator to higher than normal. When Ritossa examined the drosophila cells, he noticed changes in a way that makes DNA more accessible to be copied, or transcribed, which he discovered was being caused by the increase in temperature. Last year, Drs Virginia Vega and Laura Alexander from UCSD demonstrated that the heat shock response improves the condition of non-obese diabetic mice.

Coupled with other benefits such as a reduction in blood pressure, reduced weight due to buoyancy, and lowered stress on the joints, Alex Kemsley, managing director of Waterstream Ltd based in Handcross nr Gatwick says that the public are welcome (by appointment) to bring along their bathing costumes so that they can try out the superb Spa Crest range at their showroom to experience the benefits for themselves. And best yet, because they recirculate and filter their water, hot tubs are exempt from the hosepipe ban!

Explosion at Hot Tub Manufacturing Plant

Hot Spring Spas Resin Vats Explode!

boom

An explosion took place at Watkins Manufacturing home for the brands Hot Spring Spas, Caldera Spas, and  Freeflow Spas.  No injuries were reported. The explosion was on the exterior of the plant but the container that exploded did puncture the roof and cause the sprinkler system to break, causing flooding.

Watkins is known for known for being a very responsible company and most would speculate this was from isolated human error, and not poor processes on the part of the company.

VISTA, CA. — An 8,000-gallon container of chemicals exploded and launched through the roof at a hot-tub factory in south Vista late Thursday night, fire officials said.

No one was injured. A security guard was the only person around at 10:30 p.m. when the container exploded outside the main building of Watkins Manufacturing Corp., Vista Fire Department Capt. Robert Ford said Friday.

Hazardous materials crews from San Diego, the county, and Camp Pendleton were called in about 11 p.m. With company officials they spent the next nearly five hours dealing with the mess, Ford said. He said the cause of the blast was still under investigation.

The company makes Hot Spring and Caldera spas and hot tubs at an industrial park on Park Center Drive, west of Business Park Drive.

The container, 10 feet tall and 8 feet in diameter, held a resin-type of chemical and stood with similar containers on a raised platform behind a wall and beneath a metal roof adjacent to the factory building, Ford said.

The flying container dropped through the factory roof and ruptured the sprinkler system. When water from the sprinklers mixed with the chemical, it created a kind of slurry that did not spread beyond the immediate area or get into any waterways, Ford said.

He said when firefighters got to the factory, they could see light smoke, running water, and debris. There was no fire.

Firefighters called for additional engines and the hazardous materials crews. Ford said further clean-up duties were handed over to company officials early Friday.

Manufacturing any product can be hazardous,
And if we learn from the history of our industry,
We can avoid repeating the same mistakes.

Use Locking Hot Tub Covers – Stop Hot Tub Crashers!

Lock your Hot Tub Cover – Prevent Unauthorized Soaks!

I saw this funny story (a little sad too) about a guy who used a hot tub to get warm. I think he was using it more as a warm bath.

Here’s the short story:

strange-guy-in-tubMaybe the judge thought it was an anemic defense claim. A man told a Broward County judge he was found trespassing and in a hot tub at a luxury beachfront condo in Hollywood because he got chilly due to his anemia.

Torey Leonard, 23, was charged with trespassing Tuesday after taking an early morning dip in a hot tub at The Diplomat Oceanfront Residences, 3535 S. Ocean Dr., according to a Hollywood (Florida) police report.

According to the report, Leonard jumped over a fence and was found bathing in the hot tub sometime before 8 a.m. Leonard, who has no local address, was forced from the tub after refusing to get out, police said.

Leonard told the judge he was just trespassing because he was cold: “I’m anemic,” he said.

“Can you take care of your anemic condition without going into the hot tub at The Diplomat?” Broward County Judge John “Jay” Hurley asked.

“I didn’t do nothing but trespass,” Leonard said.

He remained in jail Thursday on $25 bond.

What this story does point out that a locking hot tub cover would have solved the issue. We produce thousands of locking hot tub covers for facilities just like the Diplomat.  They may be calling us any moment.

A down economy doesn’t appear to be hurting Branson Hot Tubs & Pools.

The business, which opened in 2002, recently expanded its showroom after acquiring 1,500 square feet of the building next door.

The expanded showroom includes 12-16 hot tubs and two additional above ground pools.

“By the grace of God, I guess,” David Foraker said of his business’s ability to thrive in the current economy. “We’ve got a good crew — decent people, as honest as can be.”

He said he thinks word of mouth and reliable service has helped them remain strong in an industry that might not normally be considered “recession proof.”

“We have a lot of local customers and we have a lot of people from Arkansas,” he said. “Our reputation has grown and we just work on taking care of customers.”

He said the company has developed relationships with many people in the community through “pool schools” in which he coordinates several experts to provide information at local resorts, camps or hotels about maintenance and efficiency.

He said information includes things like the best use of chemicals, motor maintenance, energy efficiency and current and upcoming regulations.

“We’re not trying to sell them anything,” Foraker said. “We’re just trying to educate them. It’s not a sales pitch.”

The added showroom space takes the business to about 4,500 square feet all together, and Foraker said he believes it’s an investment that should pay for itself.

But he also doesn’t expect this growth to be the start of something new.

“I’d like to stay where I’m at,” he said. “This space was made available because we worked out a good deal with the landlord, but I’m not looking to keep expanding.”

The business will be celebrating its 10th anniversary Saturday with an open house from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. The event includes hot dogs and cupcakes, with hourly door prizes and a water care class at 1 p.m.

Branson Hot Tubs & Pools is located at 800 Missouri 248 in Branson, Missouri.

Our Hats are off to Branson Hot Tubs and Pools. Their approach at providing free spa and hot tub education for their surrounding community has resulted in a loyal customer base. It’s not a new strategy, but may be the best one in a down economy. It’s also a core belief at Hot Tub Works. Through this blog, our Hot Tub Toolbox, our Videos and Spa Repair Forum, our mission is to answer all of our customers spa care and repair questions.

Salt Lake City, Utah (PRWEB) March 22, 2012

Hot Tub Sales Picking Up

March 19th, 2012 by

I just read two articles about Home and Garden Shows picking up. Both articles talked about hot tub sales and people starting to shop again for hot tubs, after flat sales for the last several years.

The Tampa Home Show Article had this to say:

Sunday was the last day for Florida’s Largest Spring Home Show and the 2012 Tampa Bay Spring RV Show. The home show featured exhibitors that displayed everything from cutlery to water purifying systems to pest control materials to garage doors.

Maggi Honda, a software developer who lives in Land O’ Lakes, rested inside an empty spa.

Hot Tub Shopper Sits In Hot Tub

“Times are getting better,” she said.

She’s in the market for a spa, she said, because she’s planning on building a screened porch. The price tag: $4,300. She said her income allows it. Her job is secure, she said.

“Everybody needs consultants and computer programmers,” she said. “We always are in demand.”

From Iowa:

Afford-A-Spa & Pools of Fort Dodge came with a rippling $3,500 hot tub and a top-of-the-line $10,000 spa. The Sundance Spas Cameo on display has 46 jets, and is adorned with multicolor SunGlow LED lights. It also has a stereo system.

“I wish I could bring a pool in here,” David Folsom, representative, said. “It’s hot enough today.”

According to Folsom, more people buy pools than hot tubs in the summer.

“In the summer, hot tub sales slow down, because nobody likes sitting in the hot water in 100 degrees,” he said. “Unless you’ve got aches and pains. Then the hot water always feels good.”

Hot tubs are mostly purchased for use later in the year, Folsom said.

“Most people start using them in the winter,” he said. “Kick it on, sit outside, snow falling on them. It’s great.”

Afford-A-Spa is often a presence at the Home & Garden Expo.

“It’s been great,” Folsom said. “I’ve enjoyed it. Yesterday, there was some good traffic.”

Denny Staley, Casady Bros. Implement of Webster City, brought with him a line of Gravely products, including zero-turn mowers, lawn edgers, push mower and trimmers.

“We try to bring a variety that would interest people, consumers and gardeners,” Staley said.

Staley said participating in the expo for several years has been lucrative for Casady Bros.

“It’s usually a pretty good show,”he said.

Paradoxically, Staley worried that the good weather would affect attendance.

“This year, I don’t know how the turnout’s going to be with nice weather, if we’re going to see a lot of people or if they’re going to stay home and work on their yard,” he said.

Visitors Saturday were treated to four guest speakers: Rick Lamoureux and Lois McCoy from Fort Dodge Earl May Nursery, on preparing for spring and container gardening; Linda Thomas, owner of Wild Birds Unlimited, on how to “get ready for spring’s winged wonders”; Rick Edington of Critter Camp on what they offer and on Dogwatch hidden fence systems; and Katie Kitterman, on Iowa Couponing.

The show continues today from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Iowa Central Community College’s Continuing Education building.

This is good news for the Hot tub industry which needs to get back on it’s feet. Good news for one is good news for all, as they say – “a rising tide floats all boats”. Hot tubs and spas could be considered luxury items, so when sales of these items is on the rise, it’s also good news for the economy in general.
